The hem is wider than the chest. About 5in wider. That is the flare, and it is what gives the coat its movement.
The shoulder barely changes. Only 1½in from S to 2XL while the bust moves 6in. If you are broad across the back, go by the shoulder.
Sizes can be off by about ¾in. Every piece is sewn by hand.
